What is House of Hope?

House of Hope is a children's home for girls in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, which is operated by Amer-Haitian Bon Zami, Inc. This organization was formed in 1976 to help alleviate the suffering of children in Haiti. House of Hope provides each child with medical care, education, food and spiritual training. Many of the older girls also receive vocational training. The children at House of Hope live in a home setting in a residential area of Port-au-Prince. They are not isolated from Haitian society but attend school and church near the home. Each child has their own bed and a place for clothing. Because of space limitations, all residents are currently girls. Every effort is made for House of Hope to be a home and family rather than an institution. A goal at House of Hope is to encourage the girls to have richer spiritual lives, so they also have nightly devotions and prayer time, as well as daily Bible lessons.

The name Amer-Haitian Bon Zami originated in respect for our dedicated Haitian staff. "Amer-Haitian" represents our two countries, while "Bon Zami" is a Creole phrase meaning "good Friends". Carl and Carole Vorst volunteer are co-directors of the children's home. They coordinate fund raising and administration efforts from their home in St. Louis, Missouri and keep in close contact with the Haitian staff at House of Hope. They make several trips to Haiti each year and consider the girls at the home part of their family.

Sponsoring a Child

Each girl cared for by House of Hope requires a certain amount of income each month. One way to keep the bills paid is through sponsorship. Each girl needs about six sponsors in order to pay for food, clothing, medical attention and education, as well as keep the building in good shape and pay the employees on site at House of Hope. The American staff receives no compensation. Suggested sponsorships are $20.00 per month.
